\"analytics_shutterstock_319414127\"<\/a>The concept of predictive analytics is one that sends many to thinking of the future. Not so for Randy McClary. He\u2019s quickly reminded of the past.<\/p>\n

As a champion of the theory of dis\u00adruptive innovation\u2014when a new idea is so much better than the traditional way of doing things that it completely displaces the old\u2014what comes to mind for McClary is cassette answering machines, Beta tapes and travel agents.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, it\u2019s quite easy,\u201d he said. \u201cI see it. I feel it. I know that it\u2019s coming. What\u2019s really sad is that some people don\u2019t see that this \u2018old\u2019 is gone. I\u2019m living in a world where everybody is driving Edsels, and I\u2019m driving a sports car. And they just don\u2019t understand that there\u2019s not a future for their Edsels.\u201d<\/p>\n

So let\u2019s check out that sports car. Predictive analytics, as defined by the 2016 MHI Annual Industry Report, is \u201cthe modeling of data to identify patterns that help businesses predict behaviors and events, from inventory depletions, to machinery breakdowns, to consumer trends.\u201d Further: \u201cIn the supply chain arena, predictive modeling allows managers to manage inventory better, plan more reliable transporta\u00adtion networks, and reduce variability in lead times. This can enhance service levels, lower costs and improve the bottom line.\u201d<\/p>\n

McClary, senior systems coordina\u00adtor for Meijer, is a member of MHI\u2019s Information Systems Solutions Group (ISSG). ISSG brings together people who are like-minded about such advances, he said, \u201ceither desiring or gravitating toward systems like this.\u201d Also in the group: those who are already fluent because of their company\u2019s investment and vision, \u201cand are interested in the currency and honing of that particular skillset. You\u2019re seeing more and more people coalesce around it because of their vocabulary and interest.\u201d<\/p>\n
