Building the future doesn’t always come naturally to people. Too often, we are harshly confronted or otherwise assaulted by a changing present before it registers that our future will be different. And we need to do something about it now.<\/p>\n

Material handling and logistics are not exempt from this. Fortunately, some of the early detection work of what the future holds for us has already been done.<\/p>\n

In this column last time, the focus was on the 10 disruptors that are presently altering the supply chain. From the U.S. Roadmap for Material Handling and Logistics, those 10 are:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. E-commerce<\/li>\n
  2. Relentless competition<\/li>\n
  3. Mass personalization<\/li>\n
  4. Urbanization<\/li>\n
  5. Mobile and wearable computing<\/li>\n
  6. Robotics and automation<\/li>\n
  7. Sensors and the Internet of Things<\/li>\n
  8. Big data and predictive analytics<\/li>\n
  9. Sustainability, and<\/li>\n
  10. The changing workforce.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The trick now is to create the future. To help with that, the Roadmap has identified 10 core competencies that are natural outcomes of the disruptors.<\/p>\n
