The goal of this column is to give readers a glimpse into what goes on behind the scenes at MHI and meet the people who make it a successful hub for everyone involved in the material handling industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this issue, Shannon McGuire and John Scales give us a peek into what they do, how they do it, what drives them and what makes them happy after a long, productive day at work.<\/p>\n\n\n

WHY WERE YOU ATTRACTED TO MHI AND TO THIS INDUSTRY AS A CAREER CHOICE?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Before working at MHI, I didn\u2019t know much about the industry beyond warehouses, since I have family members who work in them. When I found this job, I was intrigued not just to learn more about MHI, but also about the supply chain industry. What stood out to me most was learning how important trade shows are across so many industries. MHI is also a very close\u2011knit association, and I knew right away I wanted to be part of a place where so many people have stayed for so long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BEST SKILLS YOU BRING TO YOUR POSITION AT MHI?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The best skills I believe I bring are my background in journalism and graphic design. I think it\u2019s important in marketing to not only write articles and emails but create graphics that entice someone to click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT\u2019S A GOAL YOU HAVE FOR YOURSELF THAT YOU WANT TO ACCOMPLISH IN YOUR ROLE AT MHI IN THE NEXT YEAR?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

A goal I have for myself that I want to accomplish is to learn as much as I can about the industry and keep growing my knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT ASPECT OF THE INDUSTRY IS MOST INTRIGUING TO YOU?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

The most intriguing part of the industry I would have to say is the trade shows MHI hosts. I was able to go to MODEX in April, and it was more than I could imagine. I wasn\u2019t sure what to expect when first joining MHI, but walking into the halls the first day was really inspiring. I loved being able to see all the different companies and products that make up the supply chain industry. I was also able to attend events like the Mpro breakfast, seeing everyone come together in a room to network and talk about the industry. I\u2019m very excited for the next trade show and to check out more companies on the show floor!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Sunday mornings, you can usually find me relaxing on the couch with my dogs and family or hanging out with my friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT ARE YOU HAPPIEST DOING WHEN YOU\u2019RE NOT WORKING?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I am happiest trying different hobbies! Right now, I am in my scrapbooking and sewing era, but I\u2019m excited to find a new hobby to add for the fall. I love making things for my friends and family so I\u2019m currently trying out different sewing patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SPORTS TEAM?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I was born and raised in New York, so I am a huge Giants, Mets, Knicks and Rangers fan. I\u2019ve lived in the Charlotte area for half of my life now, but I\u2019ll always be loyal to New York sports! I did play college softball at Queens University of Charlotte (go Royals!) and will continue to root for them in college sports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE HOLIDAY?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

My favorite holiday would have to be Christmas. I love coming together with friends and family to do winter activities, watch Christmas movies and hope for some snow! I love making and buying gifts, so being able to give gifts is one of my favorite parts of the holiday season.<\/p>\n\n\n

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BEST SKILLS YOU BRING TO YOUR POSITION AT MHI?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I think some of my best skills are being patient and communication. Being patient is a key skill set for me, because coming into this role, I had no idea what the industry was about and what MHI really was. I had to check myself when I started to ensure I wasn\u2019t overwhelmed by trying to learn everything at once. My communication skills are also strong, which is vital to my role as Membership Coordinator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT GIVES YOU THE GREATEST SENSE OF ACCOMPLISHMENT (PROFESSIONALLY) AT THE END OF THE DAY?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Being able to know that I helped a member or non\u2011member in any way, whether that\u2019s a phone call, email or in person. Knowing that if anyone has a question or needs any assistance and I could help them out I did my job well. That\u2019s why I love my job\u2014being able to give the best customer service to anyone and making their experience great. It makes me smile at the end of the day and feel accomplished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHY WERE YOU ATTRACTED TO MHI AND TO THIS INDUSTRY AS A CAREER CHOICE?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

When I started, I was new to North Carolina and wanted a career shift from the normal membership jobs I\u2019d had in the past. I saw this opportunity as a challenge that I needed to grow professionally. I came into this role knowing nothing about the industry, and throughout my research and in my interviews before getting the role, the more we talked about the industry and MHI, I knew this was the place and industry for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT ASPECT OF THE INDUSTRY IS MOST INTRIGUING TO YOU?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Just knowing what goes on at warehouses across the country is intriguing. Being able to go on tours and see the ins and outs of different tools, operations and culture that these companies have is something that catches my eye when I see a new company come across my email who has joined MHI or is a prospect. Learning where even the smallest items such as casters come from and how important they are to the supply chain just amazes me. Also, learning about trade shows and seeing how massive they are and how many people gather to speak and exhibit is something I\u2019m still wrapping my head around.Open advertisement in lightbox<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT IS AT THE TOP OF YOUR BUCKET LIST?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019d love to go to Switzerland first, and second, do the Via Ferrata M\u00fcrren. If you haven\u2019t looked up what that is, words can\u2019t explain it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will find me getting woken up by my two kids early to make them breakfast and turn on Bluey, then going on a morning walk around our neighborhood and just enjoying our time together. If it\u2019s football season, it\u2019s all the pregame shows for NFL Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE HOLIDAY?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

My favorite holiday is Christmas\u2014decorating my house, seeing people\u2019s houses lit up with Christmas lights and decorations. My kids and I get the Christmas tree ready and put on our favorite Christmas movies\/TV shows. Even though it hardly snows in Charlotte, there is the chance it will snow, and driving north to Asheville where it snows a lot and seeing the kids have fun is awesome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WHAT WOULD YOUR PERFECT DINNER ENTR\u00c9E INCLUDE?<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n

Salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus is my perfect entr\u00e9e; I could eat that meal every day for the rest of my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
