MHI Board of Governors’ member Rick Fox is the founder and president of FOX IV Technologies, a company that designs and builds industrial labeling and automation systems for some of the world’s most demanding supply chains. With more than 30 years of experience in product identification, packaging and manufacturing automation, he has grown FOX IV into a trusted partner for major logistics and industrial companies.
Like many in this industry, Fox’s entry into the field was anything but planned.
“I didn’t initially plan a career in supply chain, but I believe in being prepared and open to changing career paths,” he noted.
Instead, Fox initially envisioned a more traditional corporate management path. Working by day and attending evening and weekend classes, he earned undergraduate degrees in psychology and business management from Pittsburgh’s Point Park University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
“I started out working as an engineer in a large company’s bronze foundry,” recalled Fox. “As I completed my degrees, I was promoted to different positions: product manager, manager of new business and general manager of a barcoding division that led me to ultimately start the business I am in today. Serendipity had a lot to do with my career changes.”
Today, FOX IV builds custom labeling equipment for complex and high‑volume environments. “We don’t sell one‑size‑fits‑all machines,” he explained. “Each customer has specific needs, and our job is to understand their operation and engineer something that works within their constraints to make their process better.”
Outside of his supply chain career, Fox’s interest in aviation led to licenses as a commercial pilot and skydiving instructor. He’s logged over 1,000 jumps—an experience that shaped his outlook on leadership and precision. “When you’re skydiving, you can’t afford to make mistakes,” he said. “You have to do it right the first time. That’s something we carry into our company culture.”
He has also taught courses in marketing and finance at Point Park University. Although he completed coursework for a PhD, he chose to focus on growing his company instead.
Today, Fox is a passionate advocate for mature workers in material handling, manufacturing and logistics. “Older workers have experience, resilience and a level of calm under pressure that you don’t always find in younger employees. They understand why people matter and bring a perspective that helps them adapt to challenges.”
He’s also a firm believer that supply chain careers can benefit from diverse educational backgrounds. “Supply chain touches everything—psychology, sociology, engineering, finance. Whatever your background, there’s a place for you.”
Fox concluded by sharing advice for persons seeking to start or advance a career in this field. “Managers are always looking for people to promote. Stand out by volunteering for team projects outside your area and asking questions. Also, join an MHI Industry Group and attend the meetings. You’ll gain privileged access to people and information that can help you along the way.”
