Technology and the Supply Chain Talent Gap

CEO Update

john paxtonTechnology and talent are the fuel of any successful supply chain operation. However, in terms of priority, the human element trumps technology. The talent gap has become one of the biggest barriers to technology adoption.

According to the newly released 2025 MHI Annual Industry Report, 83% of the manufacturing and supply chain professionals surveyed said that the ongoing workforce and talent shortage is a challenge for their operations. Increasingly, these professionals are turning to equipment and technology solutions to address this challenge, including process automation. This year’s report predicts an uptick in adopting these technologies, with 55% of respondents planning to invest more in supply chain innovation than they did in the previous year.

While it’s true that this technology investment can help fill the talent gap, implementing automation and technology also requires people to properly implement and manage that innovation. The future of supply chains will center around striking the right balance of human talent and technology to enhance efficiency, transparency and sustainability.

Because people are still at the core of supply chains, prioritizing their needs is essential for sustained success. Combining technology with the creativity of individuals not only fuels morale, it fosters a culture of innovation that will ultimately boost performance. In addition, this approach aids in attracting and retaining more talent.

This issue of MHI Solutions highlights the workforce challenges faced by supply chain leaders, the top trends and technologies supporting this workforce and how technology is enhancing job satisfaction.

We are also including detailed information on ProMat 2025, which will be held March 17‑20 in Chicago, IL.
